GENERAL MANAGER, MACHINE SHOP OPERATIONS

Our award winning client, a developer and distributor of the best diamond tools, equipment and accessories in core drilling, is at the pinnacle of its industry.  With its head office located in Montreal, they have offices on every continent and distribute to more than 25 countries.

 

They have recently completed construction of their 45,000 sq. ft. Machine Shop facility in Changzhou, located in China's Jiangsu province.  This site is to become their Asian flagship operation.

THE ROLE

We are seeking a General Manager for their new Machine Shop facility.

Reporting to the Vice President, Operations, you will have complete

responsibilities for all aspects of this newly created business unit including

profit and loss.

 

Your role will be to establish the Machine Shop as a profit center by delivering competitively priced, high quality products, on spec, on time, and on a consistent basis.  Secondly, your mandate will be to increase the range of products produced.

 

Astute in reverse engineering, you will analyze blue prints supplied by Montreal’s central office and work closely with the team in order to establish the sequence of steps, labour, costs to produce products and the treatments required.  You will identify and build relationships with suppliers who will deliver best priced services to complete product specs (example chrome heat treatments).

 

As Changzhou is to be their Far East Flagship, you will strive to continuously improve every aspect of the plant addressing issues such as cost reduction, flow time, quality improvement, business processes, team building, upgrading skills and etc. with the aim of raising the bar to a showcase status.

 

In addition, you will be responsible for all corporate affairs such as liaising with relevant Chinese government agencies, community representatives plus oversee the well-being of the building and all maintenance issues.  The position is located in Changzhou, China.

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

As a dynamic highly technical individual you could have held P&L responsibility for projects or a department or business unit or have been in the number one role in a metal/custom engineered/mechanical manufacturing environment.  You will have gained experience in North America (Canada, U.S.A.) thus having a working knowledge of Western culture and methods.  You are experienced in management processes that drive and control manufacturing operations namely product costing in a job shop environment, quality assurance systems, and production scheduling.

 

You are inherently a “hands on” manager with “good people” management style who enjoys working closely with the team on the floor.  As there is a 12 hour time difference between corporate Head Office in Montreal and Changzhou, you must be able to function autonomously yet within the perimeters of Central Office conversing in a transparent manner.

 

You must be willing to relocate to Changzhou.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Tangible Criteria

  • Bachelor OR DEC/Diploma in Mechanical OR Metallurgical Engineering OR Machinist Trade School OR solid years of experience as a Machinist.

  • Over 10 years of experience gained in a metal/custom engineered/ mechanical manufacturing environment.

  • Experienced in reverse engineering.

  • Capable of reading complex blue prints.

  • Able to analyze specs and plot out sequence of steps.

  • Experienced gained in either managing a profit and loss unit, department or projects.

  • Good business acumen.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver from specs.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Able to mobilize the staff towards goals and objectives.

  • Knowledge of production planning and product costing in a job shop factory and quality assurance systems.

  • Demonstrated continuous improvement abilities resulting in cost reduction, improved work flow, quality improvement and etc.

  • Knowledge of French and Mandarin is a strong asset.
